I am very sorry for your loss. You cannot claim your son as a dependent on your 2016 tax return if he died in 2015. 

(There is a special filing status, qualifying widow(er), that lets a person with a qualifying child retain the benefits of the married filing jointly filing status for up to two years after the year of the death of their spouse.)

I am very sorry for your loss. You cannot claim your son as a dependent on your 2016 tax return if he died in 2015.
