My son has w-2s and he did the 1040ez form last year. This year the only additional thing he is adding is deduction on student loan interest. Can he still file for free?

Yes, he should.  TurboTax Free edition supports W-2(s) and Form 1098-E, Student Loan Interest.  He will, however, file on a 1040A because of the student loan interest (found on Line 18).
