YOU cannot find out whether the accountant filed an extension for your sister-in-law. SHE might be able to find out by calling the IRS. But it doesn't really matter. If the accountant did not file an extension, there's nothing you can do about it. It's too late to file an extension now. Your sister-in-law should just file her tax return as soon as she can. If she is getting a refund there is no penalty for filing late.

If an extension was filed, it is generally granted.   If the accountant can't provide confirmation of the acceptance, she can contact the IRS, but it doesn't matter at this point.   If she doesn't owe tax, there is no penalty.   However, if she does owe tax, it is too late to file an extension, but she can make a payment now to lessen any interest charges that might be accruing.

IRS payments.

Your online account reports at IRS.gov  will tell you if you have an extension of time to file.

IRS encourages everone to sign up with ID.me; that is the only way you can see your IRS information.
