My husband owes back taxes to the IRS so why aren't they garnishing his wages or having him make payments during the year? They just take his refund every single year.

He has owed money for several years and they take his refund every year but they aren't garnishing his wages or making him make payments. He had someone do his taxes in the past that got him a lot of money back that wasn't owed to him and he got audited so now he needs to pay that back. When we look up how much he owes on the IRS website, it only says he owes but that his information is not available at this time. This is our first year being married and I'm trying to help him figure out how much he owes still so that maybe he will get a refund again some day.  I'm trying to see if anyone else has been in a similar situation.

IRS has millions that owe taxes and prioritizes what they spend the time going after.

Trust Fund taxes (where a business takes money from your paycheck each payday) is big priority.

As long as they get some money every year, it is not getting a lot of attention.  It is not however going away.

I talked to fellow worker who was an IRS Collections Officer and said due to getting yearly payments and low balance it is not getting much attention due to others having higher priority.

I would order a detailed IRS transcript or call the IRS if you want to get this taken care of, as interest keeps accruing on the unpaid balance.
