My husband & I have not filed jointly since 1998. He was told we must file jointly. Is it true under Obamacare that we must file jointly?

No, you are not required to file jointly. However, if you file separately, he will not be eligible for any Premium Tax Credits that lower his out-of-pocket insurance premiums. If he received Advanced Premium Tax Credits, he will have to pay them back.
