Married filing separately. How do we handle mortgage interest credits?

We save more money filing separately, but if one itemizes, then the other has to itemize.  Do we split the mortgage interest credit in half since we both paid for the mortgage payments?

If you are in a Community Property state (Arizona, California, Idaho, Louisiana, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Washington, Wisconsin), you should split it in half.  If you are not in a Community Property state, then you can split any way you both agree to.

If you are in a community property state see the following TurboTax Help Article:  Married Filing Separately in community property states
