Managing Dual 1099-B Forms for Spouses Filing Jointly from Different States

Hello,

My spouse and I, living and working in different states, are preparing to file our taxes jointly and have encountered a specific issue regarding our 1099-B forms in TurboTax. Each of us has received a 1099-B form for the year. However, during the import process into TurboTax, it did not prompt us to specify the owner of each 1099-B. As a result, it seems to automatically consolidate both forms under a single name without differentiation.

  1. State Returns: when moving to the state returns, TurboTax seems to automatically attribute both 1099-B forms to the state of one spouse. This is problematic, as it does not reflect our actual situation of living and earning in different states. How can we adjust the entries so that each 1099-B is correctly associated with the respective spouse's state of residence and income?

Thank you for your time and assistance.

In each state interview, you should be presented with a screen showing Federal Capital Gain/Loss amounts, and an entry to indicate how much of that amount applies to that state.

You may also be able edit your imported data.  Here's more info on How to Update or Delete Imported Data.
