Mailing 8949

My 8949 has 26 pages of transactions.  Only 7 of those transactions are coded with an M, indicating that I need to mail the 8949 separately from my e-filing.  Those 7 are wash sales (cost and proceeds are the same), all less than $10, and the amount in the adjustment column is 0.  Column A has a note from my investment firm that says "See attached statement."  Do I still need to mail in the 8949?

Mailing 8949

Check your Filing Instructions page.  Most likely you don't have to mail in your Form 8949 separately from your Efile.

Generally, if you're e-filing, you only need to mail the IRS a copy of your 8949 (along with Form 8453) if you entered sales section totals for one or more sales categories (instead of each individual sale) and one of the following is true:

  • The sales category for one or more summaries is something other than box A (short-term covered) or box D (long-term covered), or
  • The box A or box D summary includes adjustments (typically listed in boxes 1f or 1g on your broker statement)

Here's more details on Form 8949.
