I recently misplaced my NYS drivers license and need to order a new one. If I order a replacement one through the DMV's website will they give me the information I need to enter in order to e-file my taxes like the ID number, Expiration date, and issued date? From what I researched online I think NYS requires a drivers license number to e-file and I don't want to file without it and have it delayed. Thanks for any help!
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
call the DMV and find out if they'll give you the info over the phone.
To e-file your NY tax return, you will need the driver's license number, date of issue and date of expiration.
I am not sure if you can get that information through the DMV website.
I doubt they would give it to me because what would stop someone else from calling up and pretending to be me to get that information?
Do you know what would happen if I just mark that I don't have that information when I go to submit my return? Will it still go through but just take longer? Will Turbo Tax even let me file without entering that info? From what I have read I think NYS requires that you enter that info in order to file, and I am sure that they could cross reference my tax info with the DMV to show that I actually do have a license, compared to someone who maybe doesn't have a license or State ID for some weird reason.
As of 2017, you must provide your driver's license or other state ID information to e-file. This isn't a Turbo Tax rule, it is required by New York state.
If you check the box to say you don't have it, Turbo Tax won't let you e-file.
The only exception is, if this is a joint return and your spouse provides their ID, the e-file will go through that way.
