To qualify for the Lifetime Learning credit, you must have paid tuition and fee to a post-secondary school (after high school) during the year.

  • You can claim the credit for any post-secondary classes you take; you don't have to be working towards a degree. Some limitations do exist, though.
  • If you earn too much income during the year, you may not be eligible to claim the credit. However, this also depends on your filing status.

The Lifetime Learning Credit is reported on form 8863.  If TurboTax is trying to do an upgrade due to the Learning Credit, you can delete form 8863.  To delete in TurboTax online, follow these steps:

  1. Click Tax Tool from the left side panel
  2. Click Tools
  3. Click Delete a form
  4. Scroll down to form 8863 and click delete
  5. Confirm deletion
  6. Return to tax return

"What do I do to file for free?"

visit the IRS at https://www.irs.gov/filing/free-file-do-your-federal-taxes-for-free

to find truly free filing. Note that some include free state as well; that's important.
