Is the occupation area referring to my current occupation (that I started Jan 8th, 2017) or the occupation I had in 2017 (it is different from my new occupation)?

Correction: The day I started my new / current occupation was Jan 8th, 2018, not 2017. Which occupation year should I enter? Both are completely different.

It is referring to the 2017 tax year. However, that information is used mostly for statistics gathered by the Internal Revenue Service. It is NOT a critical piece of information.
