If you paid the contractor more than $600 in total for the tax year, you're required by law to provide the contractor with a 1099-MISC reporting the total amount paid. You have to enter the contractors EIN and the contractor has to send you a W-9 to provide you the EIN by federal law. The W-9 is for your personal records.
