If I live half the year with 2 family members in 2 different states, which state should I file in?

I alternate a few times between states during the course of the year. It adds up pretty close to 6 months in each state.

First, you should read the state income tax instructions on who is a resident for tax purposes. I would tell you but I don't know which states you alternate between.

Note that a number of state consider you a resident for tax purposes if you spend enough time there (in VA it's 183 days, in AR, it's 365 days, etc.).

So either tell me the states or go look this up in the state instructions for residents.
