Since you mailed the Federal return, your only option is to also mail the state return.    You cannot efile a state return if the Federal was not also efiled.

Here's how to open your return back up so you can file the state return by mail.

  • Log in and go to the 2016 Tax Timeline.
  • Since TurboTax will think you were finished, you'll have to open the return back up.
  • Scroll to "Some things you can do."
  • Choose "Add a State."  (that doesn't add yet another one; it just opens the return back up.)
  • Once the return is open, go to State Taxes tab if you need to work on the state return any or to verify your information.
  • Otherwise go to the REVIEW tab and walk through those screens to see that all is in order.
  • Then to the FILE tab and choose to file only the State return and choose to file by mail.
  • It should offer you a chance to print the return for mailing including some filing instructions.
  • If it doesn't, then click at the top on MY ACCOUNT, then PRINT CENTER.
  • Choose "print/save/view this year's return."
  • Review it for accuracy before mailing.
