Control Number (Box D) is used by many payroll departments to uniquely identify a W-2 in their system. If your W-2 doesn't have one, it's no big deal – you can simply leave it blank or if it won't take what you are entering try leaving it blank.

If you get errors when attempting to e-file with an empty Box D, just enter any number in this format: 5 digits, space, 5 digits (for example, 12345 67890). The IRS doesn't care what's in Box D because its use by payroll departments is optional.  Just play around with the format of the numbers, make sure there is a space in between the 5 numbers.  Try putting a dash if it doesn't take it the other way.

Hopefully this helps you, but please let us know if you have any further questions.  We will do our best to assist you.

I have this exact problem. This does not answer the question.  There is a value in box d, but your software will not accept it.  The field remains in red, the continue button does nothing.
