I just finished my taxes but my father passed away in 2016 and I need to file his taxes. do I need to start a different account under his name?

I am sorry for your loss. You will need to create a new account for your father. Only one return can be filed per online account. Once you start his return in the Personal Info section be sure to select that this person passed away before filing this return. Then complete the tax return as normal using the tax forms received by person who passed, ie W-2's, Form 1099's etc. The program will automatically generate a Form 1310 for you. There are times when E-file may not work if the Social Security Administration has blocked the SSN already but you should be fine. Let me know if you have any other questions.
