The limit that you can deduct against ordinary income is $3,000 per year. If you have any unrealized capital gains, you can sell those and realize the gain, and you will be able to use your $47,000 loss carry forward to offset those gains. Otherwise, you will only get to use $3,000 per year unless the law is changed or you have a gain to offset.
