I do not understand Form 8615: Student checkbox must be entered. Student "No" checkbox I was on Federal Review, and it said check this entry. I am doing my 20 yr

old son's taxes.  One simple W-2 from his one employer.
He was a half time student, and did receive scholarship/grant money, so he has form 1098-T for the first time.  But no unearned income.

If any of the scholarship income was not used on qualified tuition expenses, then it triggers the Kiddie Tax as unearned income. Scholarship income is a hybrid, it counts as earned income for filing and the standard deduction. It counts as unearned income for the Kiddie Tax.
