Who is Lauren? You cannot get a SSN unless they give it to you.

Why do you need it? Child care provider perhaps?

next time have them fill out form w-9 before they start work as you found out afterward is often impossible and you face a small penalty for filling a 1099 or w-2 without the number. if that person was "contract labor" for your schedule C you face possible disallowance if audited.
