I am in Alabama. My 17 yr old had a job last year and has a W2. Do I claim that income since I am claiming him as a dependent or how does that work?

His income was less than $2300, they withheld state taxes but not federal income tax was withheld.

No, he will need to file his own tax return if he wants to get back the state tax withheld. He may not be required to file, you can use this IRS tool to help determine that.
