I am a self employed painting contractor, from October 2022 until August 2023 I was incarcerated. I have nothing at all for 2022 I need to file both years what do i do?

I lost everything in storage. I am filing 2023 now what do i do for 2022, can I go ahead with my 2023 or do i have to do 2022 first, I am lost!

You should go ahead and file the 2023 tax return to avoid any late filing or late payment penalties.

 

Then, work on reconstructing your tax information as much as you can for the 2022 return.  If you had been issued any 1099s for payment, then you can get a copy of that information by requesting a Wage and Income transcript from the IRS.  Additionally, you can possibly trace your income and maybe expenses through your bank statements.  If those were lost too, the bank can provide them (possibly for a fee).
