I already paid estimated tax when I filed for an extension. What do I need to input when I file online?

should I pay again?

A payment with an extension is not estimated tax. They are two different kinds of payments, and they go in different places on your tax return.

If you filed the extension from within TurboTax, the amount of your payment should be automatically entered in your tax return. It should be on Schedule 3, line 10. If it's not there you have to enter it yourself.

To enter the payment you made with your extension, type "federal extension payment" (without the quotes) in the Search box, then click the link that says "Jump to federal extension payment." That takes you to the screen that says "Estimates and Other Income Taxes Paid." Scroll down a little to the second section, "Payments with Extension." Click the Start, Update, or Revisit button for Payment with 2023 federal extension.

Or you can do the following.

  • Click the Federal Taxes tab. (In Premium or Home & Business click Personal.)
  • Click Deductions & Credits.
  • Click "I'll choose what I work on" (if asked).
  • Scroll down to Estimates and Other Taxes Paid.
  • Click the Start, Update, or Revisit button for Other Income Taxes.
  • On the "Other income taxes" page, click the Start, Update, or Revisit button for "Payment with 2023 federal extension."
