HSA Contributions on W-2 Error

I think there may be an error on my W-2 form in regards to my HSA contributions.  Normally in box 12 there would be a designation showing HSA contributions for employee and employer (W) followed by the amount contributed.  However, my W-2 shows a DD followed by my HSA contributions.  It is my understanding that this is coded incorrectly as DD, when it should be W.

When I look at my W-2 from years past, the HSA contributions in box 12 are coded with a W and not DD.  My employer did change payroll providers this year.  When I reached out to my HR and told them I thought there was an error, I was told that it was correct and that is how our new payroll provider was coding HSA contributions.

Does this sound correct?  Is there anything I can do if my employer thinks everything is fine to get this corrected?

HSA Contributions on W-2 Error

You are correct.

Codes in box 12 of form W-2 are defined by the IRS and tax software packages are programmed accordingly. They do not depend on the payroll provider.

You can show your employer the table on page 32 of this IRS document.
