I have a research stipend for living expenses. I am a postdoctoral researcher not a student so this would not be considered as a scholarship for education expenses. The university is not required to issue me any 1099 as it is not payment for services rendered. I was advised by a tax specialist to enter it as part of the 1040 line 1 with the comment SCH, but I don't know what category to enter that in turbotax to get it to show up in the correct place.

You need to enter that as scholarship income to get it to show up in line 1 on your form 1040 with the abbreviation SCH.
Go to the Federal section of TurboTax, then Deductions and Credits, then Education, Expenses and Scholarships(Form 1098-T). Indicate that you don't have a form 1098-T and work through that section where you will see an option to enter your scholarship income.
