How to avoid verifying my identity with IRS?

Will filing my return by mail rather than efiling, or requesting a check rather than direct deposit, avoid the need to use ID.me to verify personal identity? I do taxes for an elderly family member who like last year, is due a large refund. Last year he had to use ID.me and it was very difficult for him. Many tries and the face-matching software did not work so eventually (after more than an hour) he did a video chat with a live person. The whole thing was very stressful and confusing for him. 

It seems like asking for a check to be mailed to his home address, which the IRS has already, should not require the verification? Does anyone know if this is true? Or maybe because they verified him (and he uses the same bank account for direct deposit as last year), he would not need to be verified again?

How you file should not make any difference.

You always have to do the video chat the first time but not again.

I hope he recorded his password for future use.

Use e-File and direct deposit for best results.
