Once a married joint return has been filed, the IRS really wants you to keep the same order for all future joint returns, even if one spouse dies during the tax year.

The real issue is that after importing a prior year return the tax software gets confused which can result in an incorrect tax return.
IRS doesn't get confused.
From the IRS 1040 Instructions:
"If you filed a joint return for 2021 and you are filing a joint return for 2022 with the same spouse, be sure to enter your names and SSNs in the same order as on your 2021 return."
