House Sale Reporting Question

I am trying to determine if I need to report the sale of a home on my 2021 taxes.  I owned the home since 2006 and the sale was final in November 2021.  I continuously occupied the home as my primary residence since 2016.  I have not sold any other real-estate in the past five years so I meet the Ownership, Use, and Timing criteria for excluding reporting the sale on my return.  However, the home was used as a rental property from 2010 to 2016.  Does this fact, then, mean I still have to report the sale of the home on my return?  Thanks.

Yes, you have to report the sale as your main home on your tax return.

To report the sale of your home in TurboTax follow these steps:

  1. Log into your TurboTax account.
  2. Select the Wages & Income tab.
  3. Scroll down to less common income select Show more.
  4. On the line sale of home (gain or loss) select Start/Revisit
  5. On the next screen Sale of Your Main Home select yes.
  6. Follow the prompts to enter your sale information.
