Hello, I’m currently 18 Y/O, work part time. I have earned $8,534 in pay and mostly rely on my parents for help, are they able to claim me as a dependent?

I’m 18, I’m currently not a student in college or high school, I graduated high school last year and am still trying to decide what to major in, however I work part time and I earned around $8,534. Can my mother claim me if I earned that much and still depend much on her?

Yes, she can claim you. It sounds like you are still eligible as a Qualifying Child. See below for those requirements. If you meet them all, it is no issue for her to claim you.

Qualifying child

  • They are related to you.
  • They aren't claimed as a dependent by someone else.
  • They are a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
  • They aren’t filing a joint return with their spouse.
  • They are under the age of 19 (or 24 for full-time students).
    • No age limit for permanently and totally disabled children.
  • They live with you for more than half the year (exceptions apply).
  • They didn't provide more than half of their own support for the year.
