Head of Household form 3532 line 4

This is confusing to me. If you have a qualifying relative, there is a gross income threshold you cannot go over. If you have a qualifying child there is no gross income threshold (and it seem like this question should not be asked then) as long as you are paying over 50% of living expenses.  I am concerned that line 4 if you put over the limit for the verbiage says "qualifying person" it will disqualify your head of household status. My kid qualifies as a qualifying child, but gross income is more than the "qualifying relative", "qualifying person" the form says.

Also is gross income what their W-2 says?

According to the Instructions for the California Form 3532, you would not enter any income information on line 4 for a qualifying child. See section B of this link The qualifying person was related to you and met the requirements to be a qualifying child or qualifying relative. (For a qualifying relative, see the instructions for Part III, line 4, Gross Income.)
