I'm an H1B visa holder and working for one American company only, and have W2 for 2023. My wife is an H4 visa holder. We both first arrived in the USA in May 2023, and we spent the rest of the year after arriving in the USA.
- May we submit the Tax Return jointly?
- May we choose Standard Deduction?
- Must we select "Spouse itemizes on a separate return or you were a dual-status alien" in the "Standard Deduction" section into 1040?
- Must we fill out 1040-NR? For both?
- Must we submit some additional papers to choose the first year?
- Before arriving in the USA in 2023 I worked for an American company as a contractor, but I was outside the USA. Must I show that income as an income from US sources and pay taxes in the USA for the first part of 2023 when I was outside the USA?
- We both have foreign bank accounts (checking accounts, not for investments or dividends). And we checked them. We didn't have more than $10,000.00 at any moment. Must we fill out FinCen forms or something else?
- I have vested share options of an American company, but not exercised. Must I show them in the Tax Return?
