I am trying to do a free e file as an ex pat. (Intuit is IRS recommended for this purpose). The system absolutely does NOT work. My 1099 keeps getting red flagged. Turbo Tax wants a State in box 15 but there is no State in my box 15 (Intuit says 'leave blank' but the system still flags it). Also, the 'Town' on the 1099 shows up spelled incorrectly (even though I uploaded the 1099 from my computer) and there is no way to change it and Intuit wants a zip code too and won't accept a post code from a foreign country.
On top of this, to actually file the return I have to 'register' at the end and it states that to register I need a US address... which I don't have! The whole thing is a joke and I spent 1 1/2 hours on the phone yesterday trying to get answers.
H & R Block has a dedicated ex pat site which actually works but it costs $99 to file. I earned nothing in 2020 except a bit of bank interest and I am only trying to file to get my second (and perhaps third) stimulus payment.
