Form 8489

Use Form 8949 to report sales and exchanges of capital assets. Form 8949 allows you and the IRS to reconcile amounts that were reported to you and the IRS on Forms 1099-B or 1099-S (or substitute statements) with the amounts you report on your return Instructions for Form 8949 (2020)

You don't need to manually fill out Form 8949, TurboTax will automatically do that when you enter your investment sales or exchanges. For more information please check Do I need to fill out or mail in Form 8949?

To get to the investment section:

  • Log in to your account.
  • Select Federal from the left Menu.
  • Select Wages and Income then Income and Expenses.
  • Scroll down to Investment Income.

Form 8489

I am ready to file my 2020 tax return, but it says I will need to afterward file a form 8489 to report what was not reported on the return. I have no idea what it is that I need to report that was not already reported. How can I find that out?
