Hello,

I'm trying to file taxes for the first time and I'm very confused. I worked as an independent contractor for most of 2021 until October and I now have a W-2. I'm not sure where to start with this. I previously used a 1099, can you please help?

TurboTax asks questions and leads you through the tax return.  Refer to the search / magnifying glass in the upper right hand corner of the screen, should you have questions.

In TurboTax Online, to add a W-2:

    • Click on Federal.
    • Click on Wages & Income.
    • Under Your Income, click Edit/Add to the right of W-2.

An independent contractor will report income and expense of the business operation on Federal 1040 Schedule C.

In TurboTax Online, report self-employment income and expense, follow these steps:

    • Down the left side of the screen, click on Federal.
    • Across the top of the screen, click on Wages and Income.
    • Under Your income, scroll down to Self-employment.  Click Show more.
    • Click on Start / Edit/Add to the right of Self-employment income and expenses.
