Filing by Mail Instructions (Federal + NY)

Hello,

I'm currently working on re-filing my federal and state taxes after learning that I could itemize my deductions (my original return had standardized my deductions because I failed to include a 1098 form that would put me above the standardized threshold).

After correcting the numbers, I tried filing the two returns via TurboTax Online. It got instantly rejected with the following error from Turbotax:

"/Return/ReturnHeader/FilingSecurityInformation/TotalPreparationSubmissionTs - Data in the return is missing or invalid. Please double check your entries."

Figured out that it was because I dated the amended return for today, but the software had bounded the dates to the year 2022.

Tried to re-amend my returns but TurboTax Online prompted me to download my .tax forms and proceed via TurboTax Desktop 2021. Downloaded it and confirmed that the numbers from the amendment correctly carried over. However, when I went to the final review screen, it prompted me to download my returns and mail them in by following the attached instructions. I downloaded the returns but the PDF is showing electronic filing instructions instead of mailing instructions. Searching around the forums doesn't lead to any solutions (a possible solution could be reached via TurboTax Online, but my amendment can't be accessed there for some reason).

Could anyone advise on how to file my Federal and New York State returns by mail? Since the only change I've made was the deduction amount, my understanding is that only the BOLDED forms below are needed for the mailed return.

The PDF package that TurboTax Desktop provided is as follows:

  • 2021 Federal Tax Return
    • Filing Instructions
    • Form 1040X: Amended Tax Return
    • Form 1040: Individual Tax Return
    • Schedule 1: Additional Income and Adjustments to Income
    • Schedule 3: Additional Credits and Payments
    • Schedule A: Itemized Deductions
    • Schedule D: Capital Gains and Losses
    • Form 8949: Capital Gains and Losses
    • Form 8863: Education Credits
    • Postmark Report: Electronic Postmark
  • 2021 New York Tax Return
    • Filing Instructions
    • IT-201-X: Amended Resident Income Tax Return
    • IT-201: Resident Income Tax Return - Long Form
    • IT-196: New York Resident, Nonresident, and Part-Year Resident Itemized Deductions
    • IT-2: Summary of W-2 Statements
    • Schedule D: Capital Gains and Losses (from Federal Tax Return)
    • Form 8949: Capital Gains and Losses (from Federal Tax Return)

Any help would be appreciated. I'm trying my best to work around these software limitations since my situation is probably a rare occurrence.

EDIT:

Further research suggests that I mail the Federal Amended Return to:

Department of the Treasury

Internal Revenue Service

Kansas City, MO 64999-0052

and the New York State Amended Return to:

State Processing Center

PO Box 61000

Albany, NY 12261-0001
