Filing an amendment to the federal tax return while state tax return is not filed yet

I e-filed my federal return via TurboTax Desktop separately from my state return; I was thinking about mailing in my state return physically to avoid the fee. So at this point, my federal return is filed, my state return is not.

Unfortunately, I realized some issues I needed to fix for my federal return. In fixing those issues, the refund value for both my federal return and my state return have changed. Anyone have experience with this?

My questions are:

  • Would I be able to e-file the state return using the new info without "double-filing" the federal?

    • And then e-file an amendment to the federal after the fact

    • I owe money on the federal tax return, which I've already paid. Once the new info is taken into account, I owe even more money, so I only want to pay the difference.

      • Ex: owe $25 on the old return, now owe $100 on the new return. Want to make sure I only pay an extra $75, instead of an extra $100.

  • Should I just undo my changes, e-file my state returns with the old info, and then submit an amendment for both my federal and state returns?

    • Do I need to pay an extra fee for e-filling either of the amendments?

I would paper file the correct state return since you have already prepared it.  Then undo your changes and file an amended federal return where you re-enter those changes which will adjust the amount you owe to only the difference.
