Dependency or Independent?

So I recently moved into my own place permanently. I’m a full time student and any answers on this question say that I should file as a dependent since I’m a full-time under 24 year old (19yr) college student. I have a job and fully pay for everything myself (rent, food, car etc.) so it would make sense for me to file as independent. But I would like to be sure first before I file my 2020 taxes, thanks!

the tests you would have to meet so you would not be a dependent for 2020 are:

1) you did not reside with your parents for more than 1/2 of 2020 - being away at school doesn't count as not residing with them (your remark would seem to indicate you did reside with them for most of 2020 so you would have to meet the next test)

2) you provided over 1/2 of your own support for 2020

the link is to an IRS worksheet for determining support
