Although I imported my consolidated 1099 form successfully and passed the TurboTax review, the IRS rejected my e-filing and said something about foreign taxes. Can you help me with this? The same problem occurred last year and is now occurring again. (Sorry I cannot seem to access the exact message at the moment.) Thank you.

Perhaps you need to include the foreign taxes paid information on Form 1116. When foreign taxes have been paid and they are reported as part of your Form 1099-DIV, you will need to go through the Form 1116 section of your return to be able to claim a credit for those foreign taxes. You will indicate that your foreign income is from a passive source and fill out the remaining information required in order to claim the credit for the foreign taxes reported on your Form 1099-DIV.
If that is what the reject message is telling you, take a look at the following TurboTax help article for some guidance. If you see that the error message is conveying something else, please share further details and someone may be able to help.
Thank you. I really don't care whether I get the credit or not, as we are not talking about a large amount of money. What I am concerned with is simply producing a filing that will be accepted by the IRS. When I was working in Quicken, I tried to do the things the program suggested, and I was able to produce a file that Quicken accepted after a while. However, the IRS rejected it. So next, I tried to follow more suggestions from the program and I think I made things worse. The program was asking about specific countries, but my forms do not identify any countries. (Needless to say, I do not understand the ins and outs of this.)
Right now, can you tell me if there is a way to "back out" the consolidated 1099 and then re-import it, trying to do the things you are suggesting? I really don't want to start the entire tax filing all over but I didn't save the file under a new name when I started trying to implement suggested fixes.
Also, if you can shed any additional light on the overall issue, please do. Thank you.
