Can unmarried house owners file a joint tax return? Hi, say two people purchased a house together in 2020 but they are not married. Can they file a joint tax return?

If this is is a thing, does this potentially get more tax return compared to filing separately?

you must be married or in a civil union to select the married filing status.

whoever actually paid the mortgage and property tax gets to deduct those items, if you can itemize.

Since you are single you might be able to itemize.
