Can surviving spouse pay with her own Social Security number?

Husband who was the primary name on past tax returns has died this year.

Surviving spouse/wife wants to make a payment but can't make a payment to IRS under deceased husband's name using "Pay Now with Direct Pay". It returns an error.

So, she wants to make her tax payment through the "Pay Now with Direct Pay" option on the IRS website using HER OWN name and Social Security number, even though she is "spouse" on the return.

The deceased husband's name is still on the return for this year as primary. (That's the way they say to do it.)

Since she is the spouse and not the primary name, if she makes the payment using the "Pay Now with Direct Pay" option on the IRS site:

•Will the money be credited correctly to their joint return?

We are concerned that the IRS will not make the connection between her Social Security number and the joint return that is filed under her deceased husband's Social Security number.

(She does NOT want to MAIL in the return, as when that was done in the past, the IRS (or the US Mail) lost it. Twice.)

Thank you.
