Yes it does unless your son has a very simple return that can be done using the Free Edition. That is a disadvantage of the online product.

One of the benefits of the CD/download product is that it can be used to complete an unlimited number of returns and efile up to 5 with one purchase.

If your son had $33,000 or less of total income, he may be eligible to use another free product called the Freedom Edition.
