It is important to file your taxes tonight or file an extension if you are not yet ready to file.  Performing this action will prevent a non-filing penalty. As for the payment, the recommendation is send the $1000 you have available tonight because the IRS will impose interest on any unpaid amount owed. Therefore, the IRS will only change interest monthly on the $2000 you still owe.  Otherwise, the interest due will be calculated by the IRS on the entire $3000.
