Can I deduct what I paid for new clothing at pre-Christmas discounted sale prices that I cannot return to merchant because merchant shortened return time window?

I have all receipts and items are now offered for sale at full price.

As Lisa stated above, when donating items to charity, you can deduct the lower of:

  • Fair market value (what you could sell them for) or
  • Your cost (what you paid for the items)

If you would like, you can use the Its Deductible app for determining the fair market value of items you donate.

Are you donating it to charity?  Why would clothing you bought be a deduction?

Yes, I am donating the items to charity.

Your donation value is either "fair market value" (what you could get if you sold them) or what you paid for the item, which ever is LOWER.
