I am assuming you are divorced and you are claiming your child. You can certainly give him the taxes but you cannot separate them on your income tax. Only one parent can claim a dependent child and receive the exemption. If you both claim your child your return will get flagged.

Unfortunately, we can't see your tax return to to evaluate your problem.   I'll have to ask you a couple of questions.

  1. Does your father claim you and your child as dependents?
  2. Do you file a tax return and claim your child as a dependent?
  3. If you can be claimed as a dependent by another person, you can't claim anyone else as a dependent

However, after you file your tax return and get the refund, you can do what you want with it.

Including give it to your father.
