It depends. You may be able to claim your mother-in-law as a qualifying relative (even if she didn’t live with you) as long as she meets the requirements below.
- Must be a U.S. citizen or resident, or a resident of Canada or Mexico for part of the year
- Made less than $4,700 gross income (except nontaxable Social Security benefits) in 2023
- Received more than 50% of their support from you
- Must not be claimed as a dependent by another taxpayer
- Must not file a joint return
