It depends on which education credit you may be trying to claim.  

For the American Opportunity Tax Credit, equipment that is required for enrollment is a qualified education expense.  

For the Lifetime Learning Credit, equipment required for enrollment that must be purchased from the education institution is a qualified education expense.
