American Opportunity Credit eligibility issues?

Hello,

I was wondering if others were having trouble with AOC eligibility and their Turbo Tax return?

I'm using the free edition of Turbo Tax and should be eligible. I received my 1098-T and entered it correctly. I've looked over several sources (irs.gov, other community posts) for the qualifications and I should be eligible.

Pulled the following from another community post:

Qualifications for claiming the American Opportunity Tax Credit are:

  • You paid qualified education expenses for higher education (see Related Information below) Yes
  • You paid education expenses for eligible students Myself
  • The eligible student is you, your spouse, or a dependent for whom you claim an exemption Myself
  • Your modified adjusted gross income is $90,000 ($180,000 if married filing jointly) or less (The credit is reduced between $80,000 and $90,000 ($160,000 and $180,000) Yes
  • You must be taking courses at an eligible education institution, which is any college, university, or vocational school with a student aid program administered by the US Department of Education. Yes

You must be considered an eligible student:

  • You are enrolled at least half-time in a program leading to a degree, certificate, or other recognized credential Full-time
  • You had at least one academic period beginning during the year Yes
  • You did not use the American Opportunity Tax Credit for more than three previous years 2 years
  • You did not complete the first four years of post-secondary education before the beginning of the year Yes

You are not eligible to claim the American Opportunity Tax Credit if:

  • Your filing status is Married Filing Separately Single
  • Taxpayer is listed as a dependent on another person’s return No
  • You and your spouse were non-resident aliens No
  • You have a felony drug conviction No

American Opportunity Credit eligibility issues?

Hello,

Thank you for the response! Box 5 on my 1098-T is blank.

American Opportunity Credit eligibility issues?

did TT give you the lifetime learning credit? you can't take that and AOC together.....it's one or the other.

is there anything on Schedule 3 Line 50?

look at the "student info wks' sheet and review the answers to all the questions to ensure everything is set correctly.

just some ideas - not sure why you are not getting the credit.

American Opportunity Credit eligibility issues?

Hi, TT is giving me neither the AOC or Lifetime Learning credit. This year would be my 3rd year of getting the AOC (if I could actually receive it).

I've gone over the Student Info Wks and have started from scratch a few times, still no luck.

Could you share how I can see my Schedule 3 using the Free Edition?

Thanks,
