My dependent son filed his own return in March 2023 and failed to check the box that he could be claimed as a dependent. He fixed this a week later in early April 2023 by filing an amended return, which was accepted by the IRS and NY.
My Federal and NY returns are both now being rejected for claiming him as a dependent, despite his accepted amended return correctly listing him as a dependent.
Questions:
1. I have seen posts from prior years stating that the IRS will not update previously submitted return dependent status used to accept new eFile returns and that I must now mail my return rather than eFile. Is this still true for tax year 2023?
2. I am expecting a large refund this year. I'm concerned mailing the return will significantly delay my refund. Would it be better to not claim my son as a dependent now, resubmit my eFile and then amend my own return at a later date to claim the additional dependent?
Thanks!

A. Yes.

A. Simple answer: no. But, that's a judgment call on your part, based on the "now" and "later" amounts. The amended return will take months. The official IRS answer for a mailed return is "four weeks or more " for a refund for a mailed return.
Thank you for the quick and clear reply! Have a great day.
