1098-T and AOTC

Yes-thank you for all your assistance!

1098-T and AOTC

BarbL- If you have taxable scholarships and did not use any scholarships for tuition, do you include the 1098-T on the parents return to get the AOTC credit and just make sure you claim the taxable scholarships on the students return correct?

Also if you have a small coverdell distribution  which return does that go on if used for books? or does it not to be entered?

1098-T and AOTC

@abcdefghijk

It depends.   For the first question, the 1098-T would be included on the parents' return for the AOTC provided that the student is being claimed as a dependent on the parents' return.  Regardless of whether or not the student is claimed as a dependent, any taxable scholarships would, in fact, be claimed on the student's tax return.

As far as the Coverdell is concerned, both the distribution itself as well as the expense it covers would be included on the parents' tax return interview if the parents are claiming the student.

Please see this link for additional information:  On whose return does 1099-Q for 529 disbursements go?
