Why do medical expenses not add up? For 2018, I enter $8,814 in medical expenses. TurboTax only shows $5,035. $8,814 should display for state purposes.

Medical expenses are only deductible for the amount that exceeds 7.5% of your AGI.  This means if your AGI was $50,000, the first $3,250 would not be deductible.

Many states follow federal laws.

But the gross will carry over to your state return.

Sadly, it doesn't. "You entered qualified medical and dental expenses in your federal return of $5,035"

I'm not worried about the federal deduction. It's the state where it should carry forward the full amount.
