Use HSA to pay Parent's Dental Expense

Can I use my HSA funds to pay for my parent's dental expense without any penalty? My parent is not dependent on my Tax Return? However, I support my parent more than half. They have their own medical insurance and not under my medical insurance plan.

Use HSA to pay Parent's Dental Expense

No, given the details you have provided.

Qualified medical expenses are those incurred by the following persons.

1. You and your spouse.

2. All dependents you claim on your tax return.

3. Any person you could have claimed as a dependent on your return except that:

a. The person filed a joint return;

b. The person had gross income of $4,700 or more; or

c. You, or your spouse if filing jointly, could be claimed as a dependent on someone else’s 2023 return.

Is it possible that you could claim your parents as dependents? See pages 26 and following in Pub 17.
